Ungraded Programmes

Reformed Theology Program

The 10-term ungraded Reformed Theology Programme trains Reformed intellectuals enabling them to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith, and to serve the Reformed Church in Hungary by their high-level cultivation of the science of Theology.

This program offers the students general and theoretical training. The university degree issued does not entitle the theologians to perform pastoral or Christian educator service. However, in case of a successful aptitude test the students can apply for a student’s position in the Minister Training Program or the Religion Teacher-Residence Educator Master’s Programme any time during their university studies.

The body of theological knowledge is taught according to three main areas of disciplines: biblical and systematic theology, church history and practical theology. At the beginning of the studies the point is on some basic subjects like Bible knowledge, study of confession, theological encyclopaedia, Biblical Hebrew and Greek. In subsequent years the above mentioned disciplines are introduced.

Because of the ampleness of Reformed theology and within its scope the subject-matters examined of special significance - from time to time - the students will be given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge according to their special interest. To do this the organizational framework is offered by a high rate of courses to be chosen obligatorily and optionally. The university aims to develop the students’ demand for independent research in consideration of the theological PhD school.

Reformed Theology Program - Minister Training Program

Reformed Theology Program - Minister Training Program is a 12 term-ungraded master’s program which prepares the students to become Reformed ministers i.e. preachers, counsellors, church organizers and church leaders. Besides a proper theoretical transmission of knowledge the training requires the development of personal competence and an extensive practical training as well.

Besides the traditional elements there are also new ones in the practical training of ministers. One of the traditional forms is the pulpit supply when second year and older seminary students have the opportunity to practice their preaching skills at various churches in the district on Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. From the new elements of practical training developed in recent decades we can highlight the training in hospital chaplaincy, and later on, mid-term and summer practical training.

The internship in the 11th and 12th terms is an important part of minister training. Our students spend this period at churches appointed to them where they can practice all important tasks in the scope of a minister’s duties. In consideration of the yearly cycle of the Christian feasts they participate in organizing liturgy and church life, preach regularly, share communion, officiate baptism, and conduct wedding ceremonies and funerals. The internship is performed under the supervision of the trainer minister of the church and of the professors of RTUD, and strict co-operation with the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District and its congregations.
