Bachelor Programmes

Teacher training (8 terms, BA)

The students who would like to teach in primary schools after graduation are expected to join our 8-term undergraduate teacher training program. In the course of the training, the students, having acquired appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities, are prepared to teach all subjects in the first four classes of the primary school, and subsequently to teach their specialized subject learnt in classes 5 and 6 of the primary school. It is obligatory for the students to choose one of the following specialized fields: Man and Society, Singing-Music, Foreign Language (English, German), Informatics, Hungarian Language and Literature, Mathematics Technics-Lifestyle-Domestic Science, Physical Education and Sport, Visual Education.

            In the course of theoretical training the following fields are dealt with: the historic, notional, structural and functional connexions of functioning of society, the tasks of public education in Hungary, educational and training preferences in classes between 1 and 6, theory of education and tuition, age specialties and differentiated personality shaping in the age group between 6 and 12 years, specific education of children with special needs and from disadvantageous background. After graduation it is possible for the students to continue their studies in an MA program.

The students participate in practical training, as well, which takes place in school environment where they can acquire up-to date methods and procedures necessary for the guidance of learning and personality development of 6 to 12-year old  pupils, and later on, it serves the development of special abilities, technical proficiency necessary for teachers. Practical training also comprises visiting classes, practices on an individual and group basis, practices performed in the framework of pedagogical and subject-pedagogical studies. In the 8th term an 8-week teaching practice takes place in a school.


Christian Educator-Lay Minister Programme (BA, 6 terms)

The six-term BA programme trains committed Reformed Christian educators to teach religion to the age groups between 6 years and 14 years in primary schools. The state acknowledges the Christian Educator Programme as a teacher training programme. Graduate students can continue their studies in the Religion Teacher-Residence Educator Master’s Programme which trains teachers to teach religion to the age groups between 14 and 18 years in secondary schools. This programme is open also to candidates who are confirmed members of the Reformed Church.


Reformed Cantor Undergraduate Programme (BA, 6 terms)

The aim of the cantor programme is to train congregational cantors who have a theoretical and practical knowledge of church music, and prepare them for the cantor’s profession in a Reformed congregation, which needs multi-faceted preparedness.

The basic subjects of this programme comprise knowledge of church music, theology, and literacy. The basic module comprises courses with special material of the cantor programme which are taught in smaller groups of students or in face-to-face classes. The theological and musical subjects are not definitely separated, and there is a continual transition among them, thus, making understanding and learning easier.

            There is an emphasized opportunity of individual talent care (e.g. organ playing, conducting practice, voice training). There are several possibilities available for appearances in concerts, in congregations and worships.

            The candidates have to sit for an aptitude examination to give account of their skills in playing keyboard instruments, knowledge of singing psalms and hymns and they also have to join an interview with the professors. This programme is open also to candidates who are confirmed members os the Reformed Church.


Communication and Media Studies Programme (BA, 6 terms)

In the basic programme the students get acquainted with the communication systems running society, the important institutions of social communication and media, and later on with the theoretical and practical knowledge concerning modern mass communication. From the fourth term there is a specialized training in the course of which students can acquire practical knowledge making them ready for performing communication work.

Students can choose from the following fields of specialization:

  • Ecclesiastical communication
  • Written and electronic journalism (printed, on-line, radio, television)
  • Corporate communication and PR

Ample possibility for practical training exists with the media basis of RTUD: the Lícium Media Portal (, the Kölcsey Studio and the Instructing Radio of the RTUD, and later on, the Főnix (Phoenix) Reformed junior magazine written in the first place by students of the communication programme.

For the most talented students the possibility is open to work for an editorial office before graduation as freelance co-workers/participate in an external work experience and “work” their way into a possible permanent employment within their chosen career. The degree offers an opportunity to gain employment in a variety of positions within the profession, such as: journalists, editors of printed and visual media, spokespersons, reporters, press rapporteurs, PR persons, or corporate communicators for companies, church institutions, local governments, civil organisations, public institutions, and programme organisers.

It is an important result of this programme that many of our former students are now considered well-known and recognized experts nationwide.


Informatics Librarian Programme (BA, 6 semesters)

The aim of the programme is to train experts with such up-to date knowledge of library science and informatics who are able to work in a variety of libraries and to inform readers and to perform readers’ service.

            Besides the general training offered by the programme the students can also get specialized as school librarians. In this course the students are trained in subject-pedagogy, library-pedagogy and thus, they are prepared for carrying out special librarian activities in educational institutions at a high level.

            The training lays great emphasis on practical classes. The university works in strict cooperation with all libraries in the city of Debrecen where our students can gain practical experience.
